The 2026 International Military Mass for World Peace Day in Cologne

The leadership of AMI arrived in Cologne, Germany, to participate in the International Military Holy Mass for World Peace, held in the iconic Cologne Cathedral. The event brought together military representatives and international friends in a shared commitment to prayer, reflection, and peace at the start of the year.

The International Military Holy Mass was first celebrated in Cologne in 1977. The Gemeinschaft Katholischer Soldaten (GKS) and AMI launched the initiative after the military pilgrimage to the Vatican during the Holy Year 1975. For almost five decades, the event has gathered armed forces members annually, grounded in faith, solidarity, and a focus on peace. Next year will mark the tradition’s 50th anniversary.

The AMI delegation consisted of our President, Vice Admiral (Ret.) Matthieu Borsboom, along with our two Vice Presidents, Captain Frank Marcus (RNLN retired) and Warrant Officer Class 1 Ferry Thannhauser RNLAF, who eagerly reconnected with international military colleagues and friends, shared updates on ongoing collaborations and recent joint initiatives.

“The Cologne Cathedral is a powerful setting for prayer and reflection,” AMI representatives noted. “It was deeply meaningful to stand together with our international military friends, focusing on peace and unity through this International Military Holy Mass.”

After the Holy Mass, participants gathered at the Maternushaus for lunch and fellowship. During the gathering, AMI President Vice Admiral (Ret.) Matthieu Borsboom delivered a keynote address. He expressed sincere appreciation to GKS and AKS for their unwavering support. He also provided an overview of AMI as an organisation, including its vision, goals, and selected projects.

In his remarks, Vice Admiral Borsboom addressed the increasing complexity faced by individual service members when following their conscience while receiving orders, particularly in the context of weakened adherence to International Law, International Humanitarian Law, and International Criminal Law. He emphasised the importance of strengthening dialogue rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, involving military personnel, leadership, and the vital support of military chaplains.

The International Military Holy Mass remains a powerful annual event, uniting military communities around reflection and a renewed commitment to peace across nations.
