26 September - 01 October, 2010
Berlin, Germany
The 2010 AMI General Assembly was held in Berlin, with delegations from 13 nations in attendance. The assembly focused on modern military service and the role of the Christian soldier in promoting just peace. Guest speakers examined how the military is perceived by society, the Church, and government, and how soldiers in turn respond to those expectations.
Delegates worked in German and English groups to refine and unanimously approve the Declaration of Berlin, now available on the AMI website. The declaration, supported by both academic and military experts, reflected a strong consensus among participants.
The assembly’s recommendations were summarized in seven steps to advance just peace: maintaining moral restraints in conflict, adapting just peace criteria to contemporary realities, fostering peace in individual hearts, respecting other cultures, ensuring UN-authorized interventions with just settlements, providing cultural training for forces, and supporting commanders in operational decision-making.
The President, Secretary General, and delegates expressed hope that these findings would guide Christian soldiers in their mission, shaping their self-understanding and strengthening their contribution to peace.
AMI continues to serve as a Catholic association linking military organizations and representatives across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia, with the goal of ensuring Christian ethics inform public policy and international action.
