Celje, Slovenia
The AMI Conference and General Assembly was held in Celje, Slovenia. Delegates reflected on the enduring relevance of Vatican II documents Gaudium et Spes and Pacem in Terris, emphasizing their guidance for soldiers serving with dignity, justice, and Christian values.
The discussions noted that while the Cold War context has changed, the challenges of armed conflict persist, making the formation of conscience and adherence to unchangeable human rights ever more important. Responsibility rests both with military leaders, who must conduct operations honorably within the laws of war, and with political leaders, who must support the armed forces responsibly. In an era of new forms of conflict, AMI reaffirmed its mission to help soldiers integrate their professional duties and personal lives with Christian ethics, contributing to a more peaceful world.
The conference concluded with the decision to compile its results into a single document for distribution among member nations. It also celebrated the admission of Slovenia and the United States as new AMI members, and the acceptance of the treasurer’s report.
Delegates expressed gratitude to the Slovenian hosts, especially the Ministry of Defence, Chaplain Aleksander Urek, Vicar General Mons. Dr. Jože Plut, Military Chaplain Milan Preglj and his team, for their hospitality, the spouses’ program, and the insight into the care of the elderly at Dom Sveti Jožef.
